Burgoo: A Case Of Hit & Miss

food at burgoo

I haven't been to Burgoo, although I've been raring to dine here for the longest time. What stopping me, though are the feedbacks I received from friends. One said the prices here are exceptionally high, and another friend said the food here tasted quite bland and not that flavorful as compared to Asian cuisine, which she said were common characteristics to a typical American food. I'd say that would depend on the restaurant or food establishment. I've been to some restos that serve really good American dishes, flavors that explodes in your mouth that thinking about them just makes my mouth water. First that comes to my mind would be the Cajun Shrimp & Chicken Pasta and Baby Back Ribs with peppered French Fries (to die for!) I tried in T.G.I. Friday's. Might visit their newly opened flagship store near my area one of these days *wink*.

table setting

On a whim, right after my work shift on a payday, I troop to Robinsons' Galleria and decided to give Burgoo a try (keeping in mind the comments made by my friends about this resto). Dubious as I am of what my dining experience would turn out to be, I carefully selected my choices on the menu. It was rather safe choices as you would see later on, just in case the meal turned out to be forgettable I wouldn't be too hard on myself.

names on tablecloth

I also find it rather amusing that my server would write down my name and her name on the table cloth. She said they usually do it on their first diner of the day. She even handed me a container with crayons in it and told me to 'feel free to write anything on the table.' I suddenly felt I'm in my homeroom class back in Grade School being ask to draw by my teacher. And yes, Jay is my other nickname. I usually used that when being asked for my name, especially when I'm dining out since, for some unknown reason, when I tell them my real name, which is Jules, I have to repeat myself a couple of times for them to get it. Using my full name, Julius, is totally out of the question. He-he!

Buffalo Chicken Wings (P325.00)

The first food to arrive was the Buffalo Wings. I won't mince words on this one. Its very obvious that the chicken has been sitting around for quite sometime and was only dismissively coated by their buffalo/barbecue sauce before it arrived to my table. The chicken meat already dried out of its former juiciness that even the Bleu cheese dressing was not enough to salvage it. Such a big disappointment.

Hamburgoo (P395.00)

Thankfully, the Hamburgoo was served fresh and hot. Its has two charbroiled patties of pork, chicken and beef. It has onions in it (which was well-cooked and translucent, just the way I like it), with tomatoes and pickles for that sour tang counterpoint and a thinly sliced cheddar cheese. This is one, mean, big, juicy burger. It was so big and thick I couldn't finish this. The potato wedges that came with the burger was also good. However, it eventually adapted a cloying oil taste to it after it sits there for a while.

Black & White Choco Cheesecake (P175.00)

I have high hopes for this cheesecake. Its quite an attractive dessert to start with, the small pieces of dark and white chocolate surrounding the dessert was like studded pearls (it reminded me of tiny black and white Kisses). However, I find the dessert too salty to my liking. The saltiness permeates in each forkful that I could only manage just a few.

Cookies & Cream Shake (P145.00)

The only item among my orders that I was head over heels for would be this Oreo shake. Rich and creamy, the intensity of sweetness perfectly match the bits of Oreo that I felt on each sip. I also like the excessive whipped cream laced on top of this drink where a single Oreo cookie sandwich nested to it. A very simple, yet a truly wonderful dessert drink.

It may not have been an outstanding food experience but I do appreciate the ambiance inside Burgoo. Its well-lighted, the seats are comfy and the butterfly mural at the back really caught my attention.

I'm thinking as I went out the resto that I may have picked out the wrong choices on the menu that resulted to this lackluster meal. A few of my friends and acquaintances told me right after I told them of my dining experience here that the food that they tried here tasted really good. I even read online that their Gambas Al Ajillo and ribs are worth a try. I guess it wouldn't hurt much giving this American bar and restaurant another try, now that I'm armed with knowledge on what is best to try out here. ;)
