Sleek & Svelte: Nokia 701

nokia 701 & HP mini 110 Studio Tord Boontje

Right after my Samsung Corby Pro phone finally bid adieu, I knew that getting a replacement phone is imminent. I still have the LG Lollipop phone however that one also showing signs of its impending demise. So, I finally coaxed my Nanay to allow me to buy a new phone.

I'm not anymore that well-verse with phone models nowadays, unlike before when I would always buy the Monday edition of the Manila Bulletin newspaper, and would quickly get the Technews page first, the Entertainment page second and thirdly the Society page. Completely ignoring the headline news and the sports page he-he! I still have the pretty hefty bulk of Technews collected through the years (on second thought, I believe my Tita may have placed it in a box somewhere). I normally browse through it maybe just once or twice I year, if I have time to kill. I remember enjoying the articles written by Peachy Limpin, Leslie Amor Ureta, Jerry Liao and Annalyn Jusay.

Sorry if I digress a bit. Going back to the phone, when I passed by the small Wellcom store in Ever Gotesco, Ortigas, the Nokia 701 unit already grabbed my attention. Its slightly oblong, elongated contours looks very seductive and alluring, and invokes femininity, which is my usual phone of choice. Quickly perusing through the specs as shown right next to it behind the glass display case, the 8 megapixel camera with dual flash sealed the deal for me.

I was beguiled by its supposed price, however. I initially thought that this unit would just cost me a little over 10,000 pesos. Just imagine how my jaw gaped wide open when the saleslady informed us that this would charge us a little over 16,000. The saleslady then suggested other phones with the same camera megapixel and flash. I remember she suggested the C7 and the X7. However, I didn't like the boxy look of the C7, and the texture of the phone was too plasticky to my liking. And the X7 looks too mannish enough for me to even hold it. With the 701, I really love the smooth, metallic finish of the phone. It lends a very modern touch yet it also invokes mystery. Good thing, my Nanay have extra cash with her so I was able to coaxed her some more to lend me some so I could have the unit.

phone and netbook

The phone has been with me for a little less than a month. I'm just using mostly its basic functions of texting, some calls and playing pre-installed games like Angry Birds and Asphalt 5. I like the capacitive touchscreen of this Nokia device. Its very quick. It also has an impressive UI. Thanks to its newest Symbian Belle OS. Although, the reviews I've read online that the Android OS is still incomparable. The Nokia 701 scores high remarks when it comes to screen resolution. Said to have the brightest screen thus far among their units, with resolution of 360x640. It also has a wide 3.5 inch display. It also supports ClearBlack technology and Gorilla Glass. So, no need to worry that oh-so bright and beautiful screen getting scratched.

sleek metallic finish

My main reason though, why I bought this phone because of its camera. At first try, I'm not quite happy on how the pictures are turning out with this phone, especially if the place is not that well lighted. The pictures usually shows grainy. I'm not fond of using the flash unless really necessary. I'd rather use normal lighting whenever I take pictures because usually the picture would stand out that way instead of aiding it with a flash.

I discovered though that this can be easily remedied by adjusting the camera's sharpness to hard and image quality to its highest. However, I have no complaints with the video quality of this phone. Its high definition with nary any hint of grainy quality to it. I'm so tempted to post a video recording that I have with a friend doing a dance number of Let's Dance with one of the crew in Johnny Rockets just to show you guys how clear is the video quality of this phone is. But, I still need to ask his permission since he's asking us not to post it publicly, even on our own personal Facebook account the said video.

nokia 701 (upclose)

There's still a lot to discover with the Nokia 701 that I haven't explored yet. Since, I rarely used the Internet connection on the phone, my usage on the phone features are very limited to those functions that do not require data connection. It has applications and widgets for Shazam, National Geographic, E! Channel & CNN Videos. It also has NFC technology that will allow you to connect to other NFC operated and enabled devices.

The phone also comes with 8GB storage capacity that can be expanded with a micro SD card. The devices also has a headset and USB cable for data file and transfer. For the kikay part, It also has a small hole at the back where you could put a dangling lace to it to pretty up the phone some more. I told you, I like feminine type of phones *wink*.

The phone comes with standard features such as 3G/HSUPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, FM Radio and GPS. Available in the Philippines in steel dark and silver light only.
