To Be On This Side Of The Picket Fence

2012-12-22-3646
breakfast food and ice creams at Picket Fence

I'm always enticed by food places that are kid-friendly. Stacy's for one, and also Mom & Tina's. When I've learned of a newly-opened ice cream parlor named Picket Fence Milk & Ice Cream Bar in Katipunan from Dessert Comes First, I immediately set about plans to pay the ice cream shop a visit. And that actually happened just this weekend before Christmas.

Buffalo Wings & Some Other Things

2012-11-22-3229
my orders at Buffalo Wings N' Things

I love spicy food and if I'm craving for one, I usually go to a Mexican restaurant (or some might call a Tex-Mex resto). A few months ago when I saw a sign at the basement level of SM Megamall that a Buffalo Wings N' Things restaurant is currently being constructed right next to SumoSam, I made a mental note to keep tabs of when the resto would open. True enough, the next time I passed by the resto is already fully operational. I went right in without missing a beat and quickly perused the menu.

A Cafe Of The Highest Order

coffee and cake at Cafe 1771

I adore cafes more than anything else. Nothing beats the experience of sipping a good cup of coffee while forking your way through a wonderful slice of a decadent chocolate cake. A good, savory dish is a plus but my preference would always be searing hot cup of coffee and a dainty slice of cake.

Feel The New York Vibe At The Heart Of Ortigas

chili chicken burger at Borough
Soft, muted lighting. Earth tone colors. A restaurant that's very masculine in appearance with a very laid back vibe but the ladies were not put off with a dash of floral accents thrown into the picture. They said Borough tries to imbibe the look and feel of a typical New York diner. I'm wont to believe that even if I haven't been to New York. So, imagine my profound excitement when I finally set foot here together with my friends, Pam and Harris, to try out what they call "New York comfort food".

A Perfect Place For A Solitary Diner

table setting at Galileo Enoteca

I've been to Galileo Enoteca before and this is on their flagship store located in Calbayog Street in Mandaluyong City. I like the holistic vibe of the place. Frankly, who would have thought a gem of an Italian resto can be found amidst this gritty district where one could also sight a pharmacy, a videoke bar, a talipapa market, a tricycle station and a honky tonk bar? This somewhat unusual location of the restaurant added more to its charm. Once inside, it really felt like you're dining inside a wine cellar with rows and rows of wines that lined each walls and brooding lighting to match it with. Their servers very knowledgeable in suggesting on what to order on the menu. This somewhat contributed to the outstanding dining experience that I had here. From the fish appetizer placed on top of a creamy polenta, the delightfully spicy Spaghettini Ala Arabiatta down to the very luscious Panna Cotta dessert.

I Dare You To Forget Me Not

French macarons & a chick lit paperback

I seem to be gravitating towards dessert cafe and coffee shops that has a feminine flair to it these days which is quite fine by me. I love tables topped with laced covers, pink and floral accents plus exquisitely detailed cups, saucers, plates and utensils. So it was no wonder that I visited Forget Me Not Specialty Cakes which I first read about on the Dessert Comes First website. It's a fairly new bakery cafe in a not-so-obscure location in Makati and I didn't mind at all getting a little lost trying to find it. I usually take that as a challenge and was never fazed by the unfamiliarity of its location.

The Best French Macarons Ever

the best macarons one could have at Chez Karine

This could possibly be my newest favorite dessert place of the moment. I've been wanting to visit Chez Karine Bakery and try their much heralded macarons which was said to be Pierre Herme calibre. Herme is a renowned French pastry chef known for his macarons and was dubbed by Vogue Magazine as "The Picasso of Pastry" with whom Chez Karine owner, Karen Yang, has undergone training in Paris. But due to it's popularity and frequent rounds on other online sites, I felt if I went here right away I might have some difficulty nabbing a seat and making myself comfortable. Discomfort could easily rob me of my enjoyment of the food that I'm eating, no matter how good the taste is. So I waited till the hype went down a bit. And the wait did paid off.

FACE-OFF: Comforting Cold Desserts

Hawaiian shave ice

Cold weather notwithstanding, I found myself craving for cold desserts these days. Most possibly brought about by a colleague of mine who seems to have a penchant for cold desserts most especially when the weather is cold and got influenced by it at some point. Though I still frequent cafes to get my usual dose of hot coffee, there were certain days wherein the pull of soothingly cold dessert is too strong to ignore.

FACE-OFF: Flat Whites & Latte Arts

flat white & cake at Cafeccino By Dome

I first heard about the existence of a coffee beverage variant called flat white via Dessert Comes First. I was quite intrigued by it and the word "flat white" has a mysterious appeal to me. So, I set about on trying this out on the two cafes Lori's site has recommended where you could get this type of caffeine beverage.

A Secret Coffee Shop in Marikina Revealed

coffee & cake at Biksa

I chanced upon an article by spot.ph listing down 10 Must Try Cozy Cafe In The City. It's already an old online article dated way back in April of last year. However, I was really looking for a coffee shop that I've never been to before and was hell bent on veering away from the usual suspects (e.g. Starbucks, CBTL and SBC). So when I've read about Biksa Coffee on that article (which is just a few blocks away from Tapsi Ni Vivian), I immediately set out a plan to visit the cafe here in Marikina City.

The Roast Beef At Dayrit's

food at Dayrit's

I actually went to Tomas Morato a few weeks ago in hopes to try the famed Virginity cake in Sucree Patisserie & Cafe. I already scoured the entire street of Scout Borromeo but Sucree was nowhere to be found. Can somebody tell me if they already closed shop here in Quezon City? Travelling to their other branch in Robinsons Place Manila was totally out of the question. Sullen and sulky, I almost went home immediately but since I'm already here and have a monstrous appetite to satiate, might as well look for another option to get fed.

A friend of mine mentioned that she enjoyed a wonderful meal once at Alba that specializes in Spanish cuisines. However the restaurant's facade exude somewhat a haughty, snobbish air to it. Unlike Dayrit's Burger & Roast Beef House's friendlier ambiance of brightly lit dining area that reminds me so much of a large canteen. So off I went to Dayrit's to try out their all-time bestseller, roast beef.
guyabano juice
pasta americana
roast beef plate

It's my first time to eat on this landmark restaurant and quickly asked for the Roast Beef Plate (P300.00) once the menu was handed down to me. Really soft and tender meat that chewing it didn't require any extra effort. It also comes with baked potato topped with some cheese sauce and bacon bits. There's some sauteed vegetables on the side, too. I just hope the ramekin that holds the mushroom gravy were much bigger. I found the scant quantity of the gravy were no match to the big serving of the roast beef slices. I do adore gravy just like everyone else. And I felt too shy that day to ask for a refill.
The Pasta Americana (P140.00) was very much like the Carbonara that my Tita usually cook at home. I also appreciate that they put a lot grated cheddar cheese on top.
The Guyabano Juice (P50.00) that I ordered has that slight tang to it. It seems too heavy a drink to partner with my ordered food but I really liked it.
apple pie ala mode
I like ending my meal with a sweet note and the Apple Pie a la Mode (P120.00) did just that. Best eaten when the vanilla ice cream has started to melt. Hot and cold; tangy and sweet. Just my kind of dessert.
Dayrit's ;Tomas Morato
I was hoping to jump to Fleur De Lys for some more sweets right after I dine at Dayrit's. However, my tummy already raised the white flag. I'm too full to even get off my seat. Here's hoping to try Dayrit's ever famous burgers the next time I visit. Ciao for now! :)

Want Some Enchiladas & Muffin?

Chipotle Pork Sloppy Joe

It was a series of bad luck (or should I say, unfortunate events) that led me to Mexicali in SM Megamall. I was originally looking for Biksa Coffee in Marikina (they were still close at that time, I belatedly learned) and got myself lost looking for Dragon Street along Gil Fernando Avenue. I took a short respite by stopping at a convenient store beside a gas station to have a Magnum Chocolate Truffle (that ice cream bar which was targeted with so much hate and puzzlement months ago) and a can of Coke Light. This comprised my lunch for that day before I continued my search. Upon learning that Biksa Coffee was closed due to a road construction happening on Gil Fernando Road I went to a nearby spa to appease my tired and aching muscles. Right after that, I felt really hungry. That kind of hunger you couldn't keep at bay by just stuffing your mouth with mint candy. Real food is what my body is aching to have and it must be sated or else I might go ballistic.

These Cupcakes Do Make Me Blush

sweet treats at Blushing Cupcakes Cafe

Working in Eastwood has a lot of perks, especially when it comes to food choices. A week wouldn't go by without me hanging out to any coffee shop that I fancy or going to a convenient store for a just quick snack before going home. It could be as straightforward as a Peanut Butter Cupcake and a cup of White Mocha Coffee at Gigi while people watching through their glass paned wall or a simple as having a Magnum Choco-Cappuccino at a Mini Stop store to cool down a bit. But learning about the existence of another dessert shop near my office really got me so excited. It means there's now more choices for me to choose from.

Of Burgers, Floats & Milkshakes

my order at Charlie's Grind & Grill

I was first introduced to Charlie's Grind & Grill by my friend and former colleague Grace when me and my other friends (Ofie and Livy) were searching for a good hang out place that offers good burgers. I'm still not that versed with where the good grubs are at that time. She very much recommended the Black Angus Beef Burger of Charlie's saying it's the best burger she had thus far. She also told us it could be quite of a stretch to finish this burger because it was big. 'It's so big it's good enough to share,' I remembered her saying. That really pumped us up and went straight to Charlie's in Ronac Art Center Building right after our work shift.

What It Was Like To Be In The Room Upstairs

desserts & coffee at The Room Upstairs

It's quite obscure location in Reposo, Bel-Air, Makati was the reason of this much delayed visit to The Room Upstairs. As I've mentioned on this site quite a few times, I'm very directionally challenged truth be told. I would really need to review the layout of the place via Google Maps especially if I haven't been to that area at all. Asking for directions would only confuse me more. I would have to get a clear picture (visually) of the sideways and hideaways, the nooks and crannies of the thoroughfares that I would need to slip through to get to the place I wanted to visit. Inevitably, one fine sunny Saturday afternoon, I finally decided it's time for me to visit The Room Upstairs.

I'm Also A Street Food Junkie

spinning cotton candy

Contrary to what some of my friends and acquaintances may perceive of me, I do like to eat street food. Possibly, the reason behind that I like them so much because I was kinda sheltered during my childhood days. My Nanay and my Tita would always scold me if they saw me milling around a cart that fries fish balls and squid balls along with other kids. Their usual litany were there's so many people who already dipped on those sauces provided for the fish balls that I may not know if its still clean or not. Or that the factory where the fish balls and the squid balls were made might be unclean and my health might suffer as a result of it.

Eating Out Around Eastwood

adobo dishes at Adobo Connection

After being a bum for about two months, I'll be back working again for the BPO industry that I can't seem to run away from. I guess it's safe to say that I'll be here (the BPO industry, that is) to stay. But I'm still keeping my hope afloat. However, the past two months didn't come to waste. I've been quite productive during those downtime moments. I was able to catch up on my paperback reading, watched my favorite soaps on TV, did some rudimentary routines and of course, I was able to put quite a number of entries on my online diary and update it as often as I want. It was quite trip and to be quite honest, I'm kinda missing already my 'bum life' he-he! ;)

FACE OFF: Burger Streak-From Beef, 'Shrooms & Chicken Burgers

My Baconator meal at Wendy's

If there is such a law that it is a crime to have a deep sense of affection towards hamburgers and in eating it exorbitantly then I would be guilty as charged. I'm all crazy about hamburgers. The best that I've tried, at least the ones on top of my head, were those hamburgers at D'Amburger Gastropub and Lusso. While for the most part, I enjoyed most of my hamburger experiences, there were those that doesn't really fit the bill. Most notably the flame broiled burgers that I've tried at a burger joint in SM North Edsa. I'm not going to yakety yak about the food that I tried at this burger joint. I still feel a little cringe seeping through me when I tried to remember it. All I could share to you was that the hamburger tasted so bad I avowed not to go back to that burger joint ever.

Celebrating My Online Diary's 1st Year w/ Friends

Filipino dishes at Wooden Spoon

I'm quite hard pressed where to dine and celebrate my blog's first year. I already have a few food places that tumbled in my mind as possible prospects but Wooden Spoon, a fairly new Filipino restaurant in Katipunan owned by no less than Sandy Daza, was the one that always stood out. Partly because I practically grew up watching his cooking shows so trying out his own food creation firsthand somewhat excites me. I also asked a few friends to join me in this simple celebration. Our original plan to meet around lunch time was moved to an early dinner time due to a mean thunderstorm that shrouded the metro around noontime. The whiplashes of lightnings and roars of thunders were truly scary. It even resulted to flash floods on our village and some surrounding area. In my mind I thought this freaking storm already blew up my plans and almost gave up. But when the floods quickly subsided and saw some glint of sun rays on the horizon, I found hope that our get-together would probably push through. I almost succumbed to celebrate by myself at H.I.D. Burgers but thank heavens the storm stopped as immediately as it came.

Happy 1st Year, Gobbldeygook's Corner!

Salted Caramel Mocha & Coffee Crumb Cake

It's been a year now since I started this little diary of mine online. I never would have thought that it would last this long. I have a bad habit of starting something but never actually have the sustaining power to really finish it. To prove this point, I still have an unfinished novella entitled "Pinakatatagong Lihim (Well Kept Secret)" hidden (pun unintended) in my computer's hard drive that occasionally winks at me whenever I happen to stumble upon it, somehow mocking me for letting her gather dusts with fears of finally succumbing to extinction. I do intend to finish it. Hopefully, before the year ends. I also intend to brush up my writing skills when it comes to prose. I could imagine if I started writing again (or continue my unfinished prose story), it would be a bit rusty. Not that I intend it to be published. Most of the prose stories and manuscripts that I write were somehow 'not publishable', but it gives me a great sense of fulfillment whenever I finish a certain prose or story. And I kinda miss that feeling.

A Milky & Sunny Weather All Day, Everyday

pancakes at Milky & Sunny

I favor breakfast food more than any other meal of the day. It's good way to jumpstart your day and breakfast food has a way to fuel you to brace yourself for the tasks that lies ahead. I admit, though, that I wake up fairly late so I wasn't able to enjoy it on cafe-restaurants that only offers breakfast food at a certain time. I'm still working on my body clock to wake up much earlier and savor the goodness that is breakfast. For the meantime, I'm thankful to those food establishments that offers breakfast meals all day. Like this shabby chic breakfast place in Kapitolyo, Pasig aptly named Milky & Sunny. To people like me who like breakfast but still find it quite a hassle to wake up early, this is great news.

The High End Tea Place Of 'Em All

coconut milk tea at Da.u.de

Milk tea places stormed the metro around third quarter of last year. It also created quite a cult following. Some of them pledged allegiance to one particular milk tea brand and would not even budge to try out any other brands. I, myself, became addicted to milk teas at one point and did my own rounds. But this new tea place at BGC excites me the most. So far, this has been the chicest, trendiest tea place that I've ever been. Hands down!

The Mami That Would Bid The Rainy Blues Away

How wonderful it is to sip a hot, flavorful broth especially if the weather is cold coupled with a light drizzling rain. I do like to eat hot soup during this season. That's why my Nanay will usually stock up packages of instant noodles so we could prepare a quick, hot noodle soup if we crave for it. I especially like those instant Knorr soup where all you have to do is just mix it in with hot water then let it boil and stir for a couple of minutes and voila! You had an instant creamy soup. But if you wanted a soup on a more elevated level, one could find such soup at Ma Chicken Mami House.

A Refreshing Way To Enjoy Your Coffee

Starbucks Refreshers beverage & croissants

Imagine having a refreshing drink, citrusy in flavor (lime and berry hibiscus to be exact). But in reality it has green coffee extract in it but you can't detect any flavor of coffee. Sounds pretty amazing, doesn't it? Starbucks Coffee just did that with their recently launch Starbucks Refreshers beverage. Non-coffee drinkers (I'm sure there's a handful of you) would be very much delighted with this new drinks by Starbucks. Think of it as a refreshing and cool fruit tea drink.

A Visit To Robinsons Magnolia

banana split & shakes at Magnolia Flavor House

I've been longing to visit Robinsons Magnolia ever since some of the restaurants that I've visited in the past are posting pictures on their official Facebook pages about setting up branches on this new mall near New Manila. It heightened my interest even more when I read a tweet from Monster Radio RX disc jock Fran Tobias about her visit to this said mall and mentioned that the place is huge. So when my friend, Karen Anne, was back in Manila for a week-long visit and asked me if I'm available for some nice stroll. I took that as my cue to suggest to her if we could take a peek of this much talked-about mall.

Lovin' Our Pinoy Tsokolate

Tsokolate Ah at Tsoko.Nut

Smoldering hot liquid, an alluring deep brown color, thin froth forming on the surface, the wonderful taste of cacao; rich, earthy and slightly sweet. Who wouldn't want to have a good cup of hot chocolate? Especially on this rainy weather. I could imagine myself curled up on my bed, reading a suspense thriller paperback and a hot cup of chocolate right on my bedside table while a light rain would make succeeding tapping sounds on my rooftop. Creating a form of sonata that would make the twist and turn of the story that I'm reading more palpable.

One Quaint Restaurant In Marikina

cake at Cafe Lidia

Ever since I heard about Cafe Lidia in Marikina from friends and the way they described how good the dishes they've tried there---especially the pastas, I've always wondered when will it be my chance to experience it first hand. I'm not really well versed with the geography of Marikina. I even find it dubious if I could find the place without first being lost momentarily even with the aid of Google Maps. I strongly felt, however, it's about time for me to explore the hidden food treasures that abounds Marikina. So far, the only restaurants I've tried in Marikina were Tapsi Ni Vivian At Bulaluhan and Pan De Amerikana. So, when my friend Gael suggested that we meet up at Cafe Lidia along with Henry, I jumped right in without hesitation.

Cupcakes...And More Cupcakes

cupcakes at Gigi Coffee & Cupcakes

I admit, I do love cakes in all shapes and sizes. Whenever I bought cakes as pasalubong, I usually ended up getting the largest portion of the cake compared to other members of my family without me realizing it. Nevertheless, I equally adore cupcakes. Miniature cupcakes of different flavors prettified even more with choices of frostings and toppings. So, one would not easily get bored because of a variety of cupcakes to choose from.

A Lunch Rendezvous w/ DJ Christi & The Christinatix

crispy tilapia

Merlyn first sent me a private message via Facebook about a plan to surprise DJ Christi for her short visit to Manila from her hometown province in Pampanga where she's currently based at the moment. I was thrilled to say the least. I've been wanting to visit her when she's still with RX 93.1 but never had the chance to do so. Good thing the powers that be of the universe connived that allowed me to attend a get-together with DJ Christi and the Christinatix spearheaded by Merlyn.

A Kebab & Steak Place For Night People

food at Hassan Kabab & Steaks

I wouldn't have known the existence of Hassan Kabab & Steaks if not for my friends Gael and Marianne. They lavished me with the wonderful meals they had here that naturally stirred my curiosity. The only drawback was that the restaurant only opens in the evening, right after the sun has set. Around 6 PM onward. I asked them if they know the reason behind this unusual hours of operation for a restaurant. They told me Hassan established their popularity among the night crowd. From people looking for a good meal after a hard day's work or looking for nice, chill place for a watering hole. And Hassan would like to keep it that way. I was also told that there's another branch of Hassan in Katipunan however they were not exactly sure of its location.

A Cozy Cafe In The Most Unexpected Place

food at 14 Four Cafe

This was totally an unplanned visit to 14 Four Cafe. I originally intended to visit Chuck's Deli and Gigi Coffee & Cupcakes in Eastwood City. But when I saw that Gigi Coffee & Cupcakes is closed on Sunday, my spirit dampened and the prospect of trying out Chuck's Deli or any other restaurant in the Eastwood area seemed not appealing anymore. Then I remembered this charming cafe that offers breakfast and brunch meals in Taytay that my friend Jolee recommended to me a little over two months ago. What is particularly interesting in this cafe is that it only opens during the weekends. So I made a 360 degree turn and traveled straight to Taytay.

Craving For Hand Pulled Noodles

"I'm a little teapot, short & stout."

Mey Lin has been the very first restaurant I went to after my bouts with an unrelenting sore gum that left me paralyzed from eating crunchy food and have to subsist on eating soft food that required little molar action. I remember I almost cried a tear when a member of the family brought home two big packages of chicharon and I could had none of it. It was a total nightmare and I wouldn't want to be on that same ordeal again.

The Cheesiest Burger This Side Of Town

hamburger oozing with cheese @ D'Amburger

I initially wanted to try a different restaurant when I went here in Gilmore. I'm actually eyeing the Mexican restaurant named Hermanos Tacos Shop but I missed it. Only when I'm about to set off for home after I gobbled a good sized burger and forked two dainty looking cupcakes in Greenhills Town Center when I saw the said resto. It's just right beside Arny Dading's Peachy-Peachy. It seemed like an invisible hand slapped me on my cheek upon seeing it. And I asked myself, "How could I miss it in the first place?" Oh, well! At least I know where to find it the next time I come here.

A Shabby Chic Bakeshop That Offers Gourmet Desserts & More

cake at Nic's

I currently have a monster headache. And this is due to the fact that I've walked the long stretch of Wilson Street from Greenhills Shopping Center and then took another long detour along A. Mabini Street under the glaring sun. After that I got slightly soaked by a sudden downpour earlier (yesterday afternoon [July 19], Manila time) when I made a quick stop in Big R Cainta en route to Robinsons East to buy some bargain books to a Booksale branch there. But I'm not complaining---not at all. Not after I savored the delectable goodies and yummy sweets here in Nic's Gourmet Desserts.

The Chicken That Loves To Cluck

chicken meal @ Clucky's

While everyone seems to be going gaga over the twice cooked chicken of BonChon, several restaurant wannabees are trying to get a slice of that crazed market. One of which is Manang's Chicken which I'm not really that fond of because the last time I've tried their chicken, I find the sauce coating the chicken too sweet and salty. One that fares better on my palate and could possibly get a big slice of that pie market that BonChon currently dominate is Clucky's.

A Hot Pot To Wave The Rainy Blues Away

food at Seoul Garden Hot Pot

It has been raining cats and dogs the previous week in Manila because of a tropical depression. Usually the heavy downpour would be at the wee hours of the morning which---Hello! Hello!---the time of my current shift to the BPO company that I'm currently working with. Although I'm quite immune to all sorts of ill, it took its toll on me finally after getting myself soaked wet for two consecutive days.

Custard + Macaroons = Custaroons

custaroons

I've been eyeing to taste these babies for quite sometime now. Salivating over it for the longest time. Not until today till I finally had my hands on these custard cake masquerading as a macaroon. Or is it the other way around? Whichever it maybe, one thing is for sure: my hands were quite shaking as I unwrap the oh-so-chic packaging of these lovely macaroons and almost quivering with delight as I gaze upon the shiny, sugary top illuminated by our kitchen's florescent light.

The Mother Of All Fast Food, Still Alive & Kicking

breakfast meal

Although, Tropical Hut precedes Jollibee, McDonald's and KFC in the fast food scene here in the Philippines, I only had measly recollection of eating here when I was a kid. When we moved to our new office somewhere in the Cainta-Marikina boundaries, I saw an opportunity to somewhat relieve my childhood memory of Manila's landmark fastfood chain.

A (Subversive) Pinoy Cuisine Like No Other

Sisa's Dementia at Pia Y Damaso

Among my circle of friends, Karen Anne seems to be the one who could keep up with my adventurous side when it comes to gastronomical finds. Most of my friends are inclined to eat at watering holes such as Giligan's, Dencio's and Isaw Haus; and the occasional Starbucks Coffee if they wanted to chill. I have no problems with that. In fact, I came to love some of the dishes offered on those watering holes. Especially the Oyster Rockefeller that I've tried at Blackbeard Seafood Island. But sometimes my palate cries out to try something different and beyond the norms. Of food set apart from the burgers, fries, Coke float and Sausage McMuffin with Egg that I've been consuming almost everyday at McDonald's ever since I started my work at a new office location.

Me Love Ice Cream

ice cream sundae & shake

Ice creams are one of those desserts that I absolutely love. It's cool, creamy comfort it offers are just enough reason for me to cheer up if I'm having a bad day. It's also a perfect armor against scorching heat. On a particularly hot day, I would usually buy a tub of ice cream. My favorite of the moment would be Selecta's Pistachio & Cashew. There were also times, right after our church service, a sorbetero would be just right outside our church's gate ready to scoop up dirty ice creams from his cart. Although calling it 'dirty ice cream' seems politically incorrect. It's just that those ice cream that we buy from the cart of a sorbetero has a distinct taste that one could not find with any other ice cream brands. If mamang sorbetero is not around, I would walk all the way to the corner of our street to get my soft-serve ice cream fix at Mini-Stop.
