at Rue Bourbon |
Truth be told, I very seldom go to bars and clubs that nocturnal people seems to inhabit every night after the sun goes down. Since my predilection is more on food rather than alcoholic drinks, I only went to such places if I'm with my beer-drinking friends and colleagues who can't seem to have enough alcohol ingested into their system. Not that I don't enjoy drinking those fizzy, bubbly liquids with its inherent sweetness and a trailing of bitterness at the end. 'Cause I do. I also enjoy the unabashed merriment brought about by alcohol amongst groups that may lead you to do things that you might laugh out loud the morning after, or something that deem too ridiculous that you would be ashamed to share it after the effects of alcohol had diminish. So, it came to me as a surprise when I chose Rue Bourbon to spend a few hours of my night right after work.
table setting |
I happen to learn about Rue Bourbon when my friend, Livy, mentioned about the existence of the said resto where actress Jodie Sta. Maria is one of the partner owners. "It was featured on Kris TV," she continues, "and the food that they offer seems really good." It's a Mardi Gras-themed bar-restaurant, the namesake of the resto was coined from Bourbon, a French quarter in the city of New Orleans in Louisiana in which the Mardi Gras celebration is popularly known. I wanted to have a look of the restaurant's interiors in more detail however it was jampacked that night and I was relegated to sit outside beside the porch entrance.
classic city burger |
fish & chips |
I had my own reservation ordering actual food here since most of the people in attendance are either toting beers or their own selection of cocktails. But what the heck! I'm hungry and my stomach grumbled in agreement.
The Classic City Burger was a hefty one. The burger bun carried a 1/3 pound beef patty, sitting on a bed of lettuce, the burger was canoodled with a large slice of processed cheese, squirted with mustard on top along with some pickle relish for some added sweet-sour tang. Nothing really fancy. This burger came to me as an upscale version of Jollibee's TLC for some reason. Nothing wrong about that, though. Dipping sauces of hickory barbeque and ketchup were provided for the exceptional fries.
On the other hand, I absolutely adore their Fish & Chips. Buttery dory fillet with a light, crusty exterior. Dip it to the provided aioli and mayo dressing, if you wish. This fish and chips of Rue Bourbon is currently right up there in the stratosphere of my food favorites. Really addictive! Quite a generous serving, too.
Pirate Alley and cranberry juice |
I guess it's unwarranted to go to a bar and not order any of their signature drinks. I love the bloody red color of the Cranberry Juice. Fruity with a nice sweet finish. To add up to its quite chic persona, a single red cherry languished lazily on top of this drink.
Trying out a more macho drink with the Pirate Alley, a rum based cocktail (Captain Morgan to be specific). It's a surprisingly sweet drink, subtly fizzy with enough kick to make you say 'Yo Ho Ho!'
Rue Bourbon; Eastwood |
The selection of cocktails here at Rue Bourbon are quite staggering, there's quite a lot. And I'll be happy to experience some more of their fizzy beverages next time. Most specifically the KitKat Attack and the Sexy Nola.
As I sip on my Pirate Alley and nibble some more of the fries. I read on my Facebook news feed that the penumbral lunar eclipse is currently happening. No wonder I'm feeling a little off kilter all day. Tell-tales of supernatural spook swam through my mind, of ghosts and creatures of the night my Tita used to tell me when I was growing up. Of her brother (my Tito) encounters with cyclops (a one eyed creature) that howls in the night and bamboo shoots that suddenly bend over to block his way of passing at the dimness of night. Waving those chilly thoughts away, I sip some more of my cocktail, look at my cellphone's screen to check the time and declared that the night is still young.
