Food Tripping At Megamall

food at Mann Hann

I admit, aside from being one of the fashion mall capital of the metro, SM Megamall is also a food haven. Just a quick look at The Atrium area of the mall and you would see my point. A testament to this fact was when Megamall held their very first Mega Food Sale last year. I dined here quite a few times but there's still a lot of restaurants for me to try. Some of which have been here for quite a while but I was only able to try just today.

Believe or not, there are some people who are not enamored with Spam. I even saw a tweet of a celebrity-model declaring that Spam is not food. But whether you call it a "meatloaf" that didn't reach full maturity or a glorified luncheon meat, I just can't get enough of it. I could even eat this processed meat right off the can. You could just imagine my excitement when I saw this small kiosk in Megamall  called Spam Jam that serves anything and everything Spam.

Spam Jam is apparently an implant from Waikiki, Hawaii. And one of their specialty, the Spam Musubi, is a very popular snack in Hawaii. Prepared onigiri-style, it has grilled Spam slice, flavored rice and wrapped around with nori. It's already an all-in-one snack and can be a meal on its own.

I also enjoyed the Spam Burger. It has two considerably thick slices of Spam with lettuce greens, tomatoes and their own mayo-ranch dressing. Sandwiched between two ciabatta bread slices toasted so perfectly. The salty-umami flavor of Spam ringed through with every bite.

I also had two drinks for the two meals I ordered. Iced Tea and Lemonade. Good thing my stomach didn't make any grumbling complain he-he! ;)

Now I know where to go if I suddenly have that craving for Spam goodness! :)

Mann Hann

cheesecake and iced tea

After all these years, I was finally able to try Mann Hann, which I consider to be one of the veterans when it comes to Chinese cuisines in the metro. I remember I usually see this restaurant situated on the then newly constructed The Spa in Libis as I commute my way to school in Katipunan, Q.C. Trying to imagine what type of food one could have on this seemingly snobbish restaurant located in such a plush establishment. But that Mann Hann branch was long gone. Fast forward to the future and after more than a decade, I'm trying out Mann Hann for the first time.

chicken okiam

Dumplings are staple in any Chinese restaurants. Almost everyone would order this to a default. Who could blame them? (Me included). It's so good and very addicting. And I'm now adding Hakaw (P108.00), also called shrimp dumpling, among my favorites. The hakaw wrappers used at Mann Hann were sturdy enough to hold its meat inside but pliant enough for easy chewing. I also appreciate that the dumpling wrapper was not as thick as I imagined it would be. Dipped the dumpling to your own concoction of clear soy sauce and chili paste mixture for added kick and deliciousness. Although I do miss the broth which were present on some of the dumplings I've tried in another Chinese restaurant.

I was totally blown away when the Beef Hofan (P265.00) graced my table. Their serving is good for two to three people. I liked the way the sauce made the flat rice noodles looked scintillating because of its shiny sheen. Tasted great, too. I had an instant lipgloss as I smacked and slurped the noodles. The beef strips were cooked just fine.

The Chicken Okiam (P240.00) is a traditionally cooked fried chicken dish that is crispy on the outside but still maintained a juicy enough meat underneath. If you want to add tanginess to the chicken, dip it on the accompanying sweet and sour sauce. Or if you want the added zippy kick, the soy sauce-chili paste mixture will do.

honey lemon tea

coffee cheesecake

The Honey Lemon Tea (P80.00/glass) weirded me out a bit. At first, I find this drink oh-so-refreshing. But when I was halfway through, a bitter aftertaste suddenly made its presence on my tastebuds. Maybe it's because of the lemon, but I'm not really sure.

I was quite happy, though, with the Coffee Cheesecake (P90.00). A part of the Mannang menu (which I could also order aside from those offered at Mann Hann), it's a very smooth cheesecake with notes of coffee with a very gritty graham crust base. Topped with chocolate shavings and cream cheese, I liked the way that this cheesecake was not too sweet.

I read that Mann Hann's main branch in Little Baguio is quite a looker. Might try dining there next time. ;)

Happy Lemon

It could very well be a love affair that have gone awry. That's exactly how I felt with Happy Lemon right now. Originally, I wanted to order the Lemon Yakult Mousse Spin variant. Was told the all of their mousse spin drink were not available. No sweat. Still remembering the wonderful Cocoa w/ Rock Salt & Cheese variant that I've tried on their Greenhills branch, I ordered this time the Green Tea variety. Half-expecting that I will be blown away with the same intensity when I tried the Cocoa variant. But I was dismayed. It wasn't even near the sweetness level that I usually expect for a milk tea drink. I wasn't even asked what level of sweetness I would prefer for the milk tea drink I ordered. Much worse, I easily got tired (umay) of the cream on top of my milk tea. It seemed to me there's all cream and I could barely even taste the tea this time on my drink. I was flabbergasted. This isn't the Happy Lemon tea that I've come to love. Oh, well. Maybe it's just my unlucky (or should I say unhappy) day with Happy Lemon.

But I would still like to try their mousse spin variants. Maybe if I go back to their Greenhills branch they would make it right this time. Fingers crossed. ;)
