Where Technology & Food Collide

food at DW Cafe

Who would have thought there would be a cafe right beside a gadget store? And not just an ordinary cafe that serves coffees and desserts but also offer Japanese food favorites like omurice and katsu dishes.

inside DW Cafe

I was just amazed when my friend Diselle mentioned about the existence of DW Cafe, a Japanese cafe, right beside a gadget shop, Digital Walker in the vicinity of Eastwood Mall. I think this was brought up over our sumptuous dinner at Cookbook Kitchen. It dawned on me that the cafe is more like an extension of the gadget store. And ever since, I've been eyeing to try this cafe/restaurant. The opportunity to try this cafe came when I felt the pangs of hunger right after doing some errands in the Eastwood City area one day. I came to the cafe, did a little checking around with the interiors then went straight to the counter to place my orders.

beef & tomato cream hamburger steak

Quite undecided on what to order (all of the food I saw on their pictured menu seemed so good), I asked for the staff's recommendation. She suggested the Beef & Tomato Cream Hamburger Steak as she pointed the image of it on the menu and said it was one of their bestsellers. It looked enticing enough so I gave in. The hamburger steak was pretty decent. Serving was quite big, too. It could have been a good dish if not the beef and tomato cream sauce was too salty. Overly salty. I have to make a conscious effort to scrape it from the hamburger patty in the hopes to lessen its intensity somewhat but to no avail. Even with just smudges of the sauce clinging onto the hamburger, the saltiness just permeates my taste buds. I just make do with the side vegetables of a lettuce leaf, a sprig of cilantro and julienned strips of carrots and red cabbage to somehow alleviate the saltiness of the dish. I ended up enjoying more the properly seasoned potato wedges included on this dish.

Same goes with the Chicken Cream Stew that I had. It's flavorful and creamy but then again, it's oh-so-salty. I guess the cook assigned to my ordered food had a grand time sprinkling salt into it. Man, lay off on the salt a little. Would you, please?

flourless chocolate cake

Cappuccino

Well, the Flourless Chocolate Cake was A-OK. Nothing fancy and nothing to rave about. At least, they have an exceptional Lavazza coffee. Love this Cappuccino till the last drop.

table setting

You might think that it's already the end of the road for me and DW Cafe because of this quite lackluster visit. But even as I finish my coffee and prepare to leave, I know this lackadaisical experience could be tag as one of those odd days, like a bad hair day for some people. Surely, this isn't DW Cafe with its best foot forward. Absolutely not if I based it on all the wonderful reviews about their food that I've read online.

another shot of DW Cafe's interior

So, I didn't hesitate a bit when I brought my friends (Henry and Gael) here with me one day to try out again their food. It's my friends first visit to DW Cafe and I was curious as to what would be their reaction with the food here. And it came as to no surprise to me that I enjoyed the food here this time around. It proved the point that my earlier visit here was just a mere case of 'one of those days when things are a little off.'

Beef Curry Rice

chicken teriyaki

prawn katsu curry

We all got rice meals that day, selecting from their curry rice meals and donburri plates. Henry got the Beef Curry Rice. It's a simple enough dish with thinly sliced beef covered in thick orangey sauce that reminded me more of a kare-kare sauce than a curry sauce. The spiciness of the sauce was rather benign as well, but wonderful nevertheless. The beef strips were soft and tender and that creamy sauce inadvertently smeared my lips and the small part of my cheek. Delicious. Mouthwatering. Not realizing I also want one for my own as I pick up another piece of that succulent beef strips with the use of my chopsticks.

Gael had the Teriyaki Chicken Don. The chicken meat was equally succulent and covered with that sweet salty teriyaki sauce. I was surprised when Gael removed the chicken skin from her meat and placed it on my plate. She said she'd rather eat just the meat without the skin. I'd say, 'Someone's loss is someone's gain.'

Since I currently have the predilection to any katsu, I easily chose the Prawn Katsu Curry. Dredged in panko breadcrumbs and then dip fried, it gave the prawn katsu a very crunchy exterior while the seafood's meat within remained succulent. I'm just flabbergasted with the curry part of the dish. The sauce reminded me more of my Tita's own version of kaldereta sauce. Especially with the diced potatoes and carrots added into it, the similarity was unmistakable. But this one, the sauce, has some heat. The spiciness didn't announced itself right away. But the presence of it was made known as I dabbed some of the sauce to my katsu and on the rice.

blueberry cheesecake

And then the Blueberry Cheesecake graced our table. And all of us ogled by the sight of it. A daintily looking cake slice with a sexy sheen of blueberry sauce on top and prettified even more with rosettes of cream piped at the end. I just learned that Henry's current sweet addiction is blueberry cheesecake. No wonder he conspicuously forked more often on this slice and beaten me and Gael on eating it to the last crumb. I couldn't blame him. DW cafe's version of the blueberry cheesecake is really addictive.

DW Cafe; Eastwood Mall

Their frapp drinks were said to be a must-try. Would definitely go for it once I'm back in the area. :)
